#IXD303 – Usability Testing

The Brief

Metrics 

This will be my assessment and recordings of the users interacting with my app. I’m looking at the time it takes to complete a  task, their facial expressions, verbal feedback, etc.

Tasks 

I’ve set a number of tasks, some more important than others to view how my user’s complete them, additionally I will be looking for any obstacles they come across.

Questions

Upon completing a task, I will ask the user questions from the brief below to gain verbal feedback on their experience.

Below I have set a brief, that I will be working off for my usability testing to outline a clear-cut guide on what I need to do, as I am very forgetful when it comes to these types of examinations.

Task

A handy way to measure the performance of users is to record their time accomplishing a goal, this can be then averaged with other users (and exterior sources) to see if there is an underlying problem in the design. If so it could potentially tell us that our experience isn’t providing the best route for our users. Below I have separated and created a table to measure the time it took to complete an individual task.

(Time was started after telling participants to do a task).

The potential downside to this assessment is having the users conduct these tests on a laptop instead of a mobile device as the screen kept zooming in after every element was selected. Many of the users shown above completed the tasks efficiently, however, some did indeed struggle with certain tasks.

What are the problems these tests highlighted?

Parents

  • For parents, the wording on the goal section seemed like it presented information related to goals instead of mood.
  • Some headings such as “assign a goal” in goal the goal section needs to be highlighted to direct the user to a task.
  • Move the chat section to somewhere more visible on the profile as users found it really hard to find it.
  • Differentiate the sign-in/change profile button – colour code & move position

Children 

  • Similarly, what I’ve done with my buttons, I should design the mood tree to feel more ‘clickable’ creating a more engaging and directional experience.
  • Make the + signs on the ‘add new goal’ larger and more prominent
  • Many users struggled to change/buy new characters.
  • Mood tasks could potentially be easier – visually obtrusive?

What’s next?

These tests that I have conducted have proved to be extremely efficient, especially with the finer and more minute details. Now it’s time to fix many of the issues that are highlighted above.
