Post 1 – Week 1 – Shapes and Form.

For my first assignment under this module, I was asked to choose three characters and find their underlying form through tracing. For the sake of the variety I chose an anime character, an american cartoon character and a character from an indie multimedia project.

The first character I chose was Serufu Yua, the protagonist of the 2022 anime, Do It Yourself!! (charcter designs by Yūsuke Matsuo). I chose this character because I find the round, stylized nature of her design quite appealing.

Next I chose the character of Beck, the protagonist of Tron Uprising (designed by Robert Valley). The show’s polygonal art style stood out in particular to me and so I thought they would lend themselves well to this project due to their angular nature.

Finally, I chose to do a study of Clair, the protagonist of Weilin Zhang’s I’ll Of You. Zhang’s work in anime is the type that consistently fills me with a sense of awe, especially given his relative youth compared to other inspirational greats. Studying his work from a structural perspective is something I hope will lead to an improvement in my own abilities as an artist, which is why I used this project as starting point for that goal.

In conclusion, I found this assignment quite beneficial in developing my artistic eye, as I have started to notice the underlying cylinders in the art hanging on my wall. However, I still feel I have a decently long way to go in being able to use them in my own art, as I found it difficult thinking about how to draw the faces of the cylinders from certain angles, and how to convey those angles with so few lines. So I hope I can use this assignment as inspiration to put more effort into learning art fundamentals to allow for stronger posing in my animations.
