Animated Strategies – Assignment 1 – Self Reflection

During this module I really enjoyed developing 3D assets and node systems in Unreal 5. My 3D assets I think were my strongest contributions, I think they worked well within the environment and artsyle that chosen. What worked least was my editing, I had wanted to spend some time experimenting and learning how to edit better and had given myself time to do so but the rendering issues held me back in that area.

I learned a lot as a team member during this assignment, I began to fall into the role of a leader within the group as I naturally organised, assigned and supported my team throughout the task. I enjoy this role, mainly because I like learning how to solve problems and helping others. It was tricky sometimes being part of a team and trying to be cohesive with everyone, but our artstyle was very strong and clear.

If I were to start this module again I would do tests of everything sooner than later, so it saves me headaches and stress later on as well as knowing any issues sooner and being able to have solutions if anyone else needs them. During the assignment I tried to work on multiple things at once and I was finding myself overwhelmed, but I was told to just focus on the priority of the assignment and work on the extra bits later. I applied that to my work and because of that I had a week to render and edit before submission. I would have had this in mind from the start if I had the chance to redo the assignment. I also would have pushed a bit harder for team meetings, I wanted us to meet or talk once a week about progress but it was hard with everyones schedules, but with the visual updates that were sent into the group chat that helped fill that gap immensely.

One thing I would change about my project would be the size of the environment I built, I thought I created a decently sized one but I had some annoying issues with lighting and filming too. I actually extended the length of the church and it was just enough for me to use. I was afraid of trying to fill in a large space while keeping conscious of the texture limits unreal has and my laptop was having.

Over all I had a really fun time on this assignment, I enjoyed the entire process and learned a lot though lectures and research. I hope to make my own unreal project in the future to further my skills and comfortability with it, and I could see myself even using it as a final year project.
