During week 4 we were introduced to Substance Painter. We were also shown how to export as an FBX from Maya and import to Substance, adjusting the resolution and why it’s best to stick around 2048, as well as shown the interface and how to set up basic layers with masks. Substance was a lot to take in at first, it took me looking through a few extra videos that the lecturers uploaded as well as just messing around in Substance.
Features like channels and height maps I still don’t get fully but will rewatch the videos on blackboard, and find some others on youtube.
I followed the hammer tutorial.
I was influenced by the model I was making myself at the time, which was going to feature a lot of gold and marble like textures and materials. I liked using the smart materials a lo, it gives a more instant look and I can adjust it how I want after.
Another tool I felt was really useful was the polygon fill, which made the lay down of base colours of materials much easier.
During the concepting of the Animation characters Alec mentioned a handpainted look would be quite nice and shared some examples. I agree and I hope to use some hand painting in my final model as some practice as well!
