500 Word Reflection – Semester 1

With all its difficulties when creating my animation, in the end I am proud of what I have created. I had pretty much no experience in animation or using any of the programs like Krita or Premier Pro, so to see it come from nothing to something I couldn’t imagine producing months ago is incredibly rewarding and motivating.

  • What worked well? & Why?

I think what worked best in my animation was the close-up human shots, as I am more familiar with human anatomy than that of a monster’s. I also think it is because I filmed my own reference of what I exactly wanted and therefore my animation reflected that much more than the other shots.

  • What did not work well &why?

My group and I were quite ambitious with designs and story, we decided to use semi realistic characters and have a lot of them interacting, moving, and creating a lot of facial expressions. As much as it was a challenge, I found myself worried and stressed about the look and application of the animation fundamentals. Knowing your limits but still wanting to push yourself is a difficult balance.

  • What did I learn about creativeteamwork?

What I learned about teamwork is the balance of sharing and developing. It’s important to have all the members be heard and their input noted and discussed, as I think no matter what is said it can always evolve and add to the work. I am thankful that in my group as well as the other groups I worked with for a brief time are receptive and willing to hear ideas. Animation is very much a team environment, I think it’s good to know you are there to help and have that support returned.

  • If I were to start the moduleagain, what would I do differently and why?

I know I will try to manage my time better. I am usually quite good with time management but getting sick often this year put me behind a lot and in turn my confidence in doing some of the work really wavered. I think as a group member I try to keep things on track and clear, but I feel like I could have done more, especially for members working from home. Other than that, I felt excited and comfortable trying new things but my skills as a potential group leader, organizer and member are still to be developed further.

  • What do I need to do more/less of to improve my animation practice?

I really enjoyed learning the basics of animation Squash & Stretch being one I enjoyed playing with, but I do feel that my timing isn’t where I wanted it to be. Trial and error I think is the best method of learning these things. The more I fail, the better I recognize how to improve. I also have been trying to follow Aaron Blaise’s animation workshop, learning from experienced animators and industry folk is incredibly valuable as well.
