Colour Homework

Watching the lecture and guides for this homework was very useful, especially when trying to convey a certain mood and atmosphere for environments. I really enjoy using colour but I feel I’m not the most adept at it, so watching videos from artists like Bob Ross and studying works of Mark Maggiori who uses bold colours, referencing games like Dragon age and Borderlands. Ross especially will explain which colours he uses and why it is more fitting when creating a certain environments.

I started off with the thumbnail colour study. This study uses analogous colours whcih is a colour palette that exist alongside eachother on a colour wheel. In my study I sketched a quick Jazz/Speakeasy environment, in the world that it is set in candy is illegal and sold in underground bars. In my mind the environment is a place of entertainment, fun, passion, fashion and luxury which I reflected in using colours such as pink, purple and red.

The next task was trying out studies to express mood on a premade lineart piece.

Blue hues can symbolise a sense of security and calmness. Thats what I tried to portray in my first study, and I think it went well although I had some trouble with the shading. I felt adding a glowing moon would help with a light source and give more of a serene feeling. I added some snow on the mountain top as well to create more depth of environment and a better break between shades of the large stones and mountain.

The other study I wanted to create an uneasy, magical feeling. I used green hues as well as subtle dark purples that compliment each other. For the greens I leaned toward neon yellowish, sickly greens that can represents danger, corruption and an ominous feeling which is what I wanted to execute. If I had used greens that related more to nature it would have given a feeling of balance, relaxation and growth. Many effects used in movies, tv shows and games use greens to symbolise a sick magic or terrible aura.
