For the tonal homework, I found quite quickly that it was harder to try and create strong contrast in outside environments that are city based. I think the issue I have is also creating texture on the buildings, my alley study feels very flat compared to the inside diner concept maybe because of the more interesting light sources.
The world/animation is set at night or very early morning, which I think has made it difficult for me when breaking up different values, and why I include a strong light source. Compositional tone and value studies by Dean Cornwell especially were a big influence as well when trying to figure out this homework, trying to recognise and apply the strong contrast. I definitely need much more practice to achieve that type of tonal work, but I have many sources and reference to try and mimic those features in my free time.
