For this homework task, I really needed all the help and examples that were provided in the folder. I am not comfortable with environmental work, and perspective is something I find difficult to apply to my own personal work. Most of my screenshots that I used for practice are from Japanese films, such as Akira, Howl’s Moving Castle and Grave of the Fireflies. These first came to mind because of how ingrained in my memory the beautiful and detailed scenery was, and it looked much more interesting and fun to try and attempt.
One point perspective
One point perspective is the method of using one vanishing point on a horizon line, this helps create the aspect of distance in an image. The diagonal lines that come from the vanishing point often overlap with features in an image, this gives the viewer a type of perspective that feels three dimensional and proportionate.
Two-point perspective
This method is a type of linear perspective. This again allows a 3rd dimensional space can be created on a 2D surface. Two-point perspective uses two points placed on the horizon line to gain the desired effect.
Composition
For the composition part of the homework I wanted to give the majority amount of thumbnails to the World Theme our group picked, Neo Noir. I still wanted to try and make some concepts for the other ideas we had, so the other six I completed are in relation to those themes. As I am not used to environmental art I found this task difficult, especially trying to convey some of the themes through simple greyscale composition but the previous practice with perspective did help a lot. Environmental art is an area that I’d like to get better at, and will apply what I’ve learned to other pieces. Manny had created collaborative moodboards on pinterest for each concept, this is where I gained my inspiration and references.
