For this week, we focused on the principles of composition and perspective, something I’ve struggled with for years when it comes to my personal art. It tends to be the reason I have a lean towards 3D artwork/animations because I don’t have to worry about the stress of figuring out how to draw a character from a specific angle. Nevertheless, I’m in this course to learn so, like always, I went into the lesson with an open mind. We talked about one and two point perspectives and I ended up doing a few tests on my iPad which I feel came out really well for a first-try. From now on, I’ll try to make an effort to practise one point perspective drawing when I get the chance because I can see how much it could help the likes of my environmental artwork (something I desperately need to improve going into this Celtic world project with my group).

Speaking of my group, we fruther developed the project today through what we learnt about backgrounds and perspective. I wasn’t able to sketch 4 background thumbnails like we were asked to but I feel that’s down to me spending too much time perfecting things that should remain imperfect, such as my sketches for literally anything I do. It’s been a problem for a while now and it’s thankfully something I’m aware of, I just need to lower the expectations I hold to myself and try to find more enjoyment from drawing instead of treating it as seriously as I do. Anyway, I threw together two little sketches that I feel fit with our theme; one being a robotically modified deer staring at the viewer like its being watched through a camera and the other being a silhouette of both a deer and a rabbit staring off into the distance, a city seen burning far far beyond the edges of the forest. Again, our theme is focusing heavily on the de-naturlisation of natural land and so I feel a shot elaborating on the destruction humanity has brought to both nature and itself would be powerful and capture the narrative of our world in a nutshell. For homework, we had to create 6 sketch thumbnails using what we learned about perspective and composition at the beginning of the day which I immediately knew would be a challenge. Our world really only consists of a forest with the backdrop of an abandoned city so churning out 6 sketched backgrounds based off that could prove to be difficult if I wanted them all to be unique. Nevertheless, I gave it a try and I think I came out with some good results, my favourite absolutely being the deer caught on a motion camera sketch.
