Week4
Substance Painter
Before this week’s classes, I attempted to catch up on week 2’s lectures, which covered modelling a ‘Milkshake cup’ and ‘Flower vase’. This Lectured covered how to create more complex shapes, adding/reducing subdivisions, the multi-cut tool and how to assign different materials. I found this exercise helpful, although I did struggle at times remembering certain controls, but with practice I’m sure I’ll get the hang of it.
In Wednesday’s class we covered how to check on a Maya model’s UVs and that they’re correctly unfolded, then exporting a selection into Substance Painter. I still struggled a little bit with checking the UVs, but Mike helped me out, so I was able to move on from there.
Once in SP, we covered basic controls/navigations, which were quite similar to Maya so I picked them up to problem. Mike then went through explaining how layers worked and how to apply textures to an object. He also covered adding masks to apply different textures to only certain sections of the model using the selection tool. I had some time to fiddle about with the different textures I wanted on my model and played around with the texture set settings. My favourite setting would have to be the roughness, as I really liked how it made textures super reflective. After this we covered how alpha textures work and how to add extra surface details and object wear. This can also be applied by baking the model, which automatically applies extra depth to the object.
I really enjoyed this exercise and I like the outcome of my version of the War hammer.
