Week 1

Module intro

To start off semester 2, we got an official intro into our first assignment “Intro into 3D modelling”. In the class we just went over the Module Handbook and some previous first year’s models as examples of what is possible and inspiration for our own ideas.

Personally, I’m very intimated by 3D as I’ve never worked in this area before this course. But seeing the examples does pique my interest and I can already think of some ideas as to what my design may be.

In the afternoon we did an intro exercise, covering the basics to Maya, such as shortcuts and different tools. We were tasked with constructing a café scene, with some stools and tables, using poly modelling, scaling and positioning them. I found this part enjoyable and easy to follow along. We also looked at using vertex to make one end of an object wider or narrower, which is how I made the legs for both the table and stools. Finally, I bevelled the edges of both the tabletop and stools, to give a more natural look.

After I modelled my first group, I learned how to group objects and then duplicate them too. To save time having to restart the whole process again. I placed and rotated a few objects to make the scene more believable.

Overall, I really enjoyed this exercise and I think I picked up on the shortcuts quickly too.

For the homework challenge I tried out modelling a more complex set of chairs and tables. I wanted to see if I had picked up on this week’s class materials, so I tried using some real-life references to make my scene more believable. I chose to make some alterations so that each chair was unique and angled them so that it looked more organic. As for the table, I went for a more ovular shape with more complex structured legs. I had a lot of fun with this, and I like the outcome.
