For HW 1, I decided to breakdown: Jake (Adventure Time), Miles Morales (Into the Spiderverse) and Stella (Spirit Farer).
I found this exercise fun and interesting as it really made me think about the basic structures that make up these characters.
With Jake’s study, I found that he is basically 2 circles stacked onto top of each other to form a bean shape, with 2 big circle eyes and a little downward, curved sausage shape for a muzzle. Whilst his limbs are thin cylinders that can bend and stretch anywhere (no real elbow or wrist joints) as his character can shift and morph into any shape and or form.
With Miles’ form/shape study, I realised that he is just a semi-realistic figure, with slender and long limbs but good build. This reflects how his character is quick and agile with all the action his character does. However, his lankiness also shows that he’s still young and growing, being in his teenage years still, as opposed to a more mature hero character that would have a more filled out figure.
Stella is an anthropomorphic deer characters that holds herself in a poised manner. The shapes that make her up are all very smooth and flowing, with a puffed-up chest and long limbs to reflect her pride. Though, not snobby as she doesn’t turn her nose up and the lack of any sharp or jagged edges that normally represent such a character. She’s a quiet and comforting motherly presence but not entirely chummy either.
