Week 6- Application

Week 6’s lecture involved the discussion of developing your own business card and Daniel explained how we would go about completing this, he showed  us examples of good business cards and resources to use. One of our tasks was to create a business card for our brand that included the aspects of our brand identities that we have designed so far. I have included my process and I have began with including some images of business cards which I have found inspiring and very influential.

Business card inspiration

A theme I have noticed from the business cards that I have chosen to include here is that they are all quite simple and personally I think they are the best ones, so I have kept that in mind when designing my own card. I particularly like the first image that I have included above with the same business card but different shades, it adds a nice personal touch, I also like how the black card above has a different texture on the font, it’s like a foil wrap on it I think that could be a fun feature and something to look into.

Initial Designs

Here are my initial designs for my business card-

First Critiques

Daniel suggested that I should keep the front of my business card simple with just the monogram as it is strong enough on his own without any added features or designs. For the back he suggested I just place may workdmark with my information underneath, after making these changes we had our group critiques and I presented my new business cards alongside my whole brand identity.

Back

During this next critique Daniel explained that I have some leading to fix up on the back, so I need to make the lines of text closer together and he informed me that I should also make my name and title bolder or a different weight in order to make that information stand out and it will balance the back of the card out a lot more.

I explained to the group that I am still experimenting with colour and I wasn’t sure of which scheme to choose, I have added my experimentations below.

Within the group critique everyone chose a colour that they liked and everyone chose a different combination, Daniel explained that this could turn into an interesting aspect to my brand. I could choose a range of colours to present and then people can chose which business card they want to get based on their colour preferences.

Final business card layout

Black and white

I have included this in black and white to show the layout and the changes I have made.

Coloured options

With regards to the colour options, I could present an animation of the cards changing colours and the viewer can chose their favourite and they would be able to select that particular coloured card.

What is next?

I feel  like for this surprise/choice of  colour idea I need to select a range of colours that will work nicely together but still give a broad range of combinations. I am not sure if they should be in the same colour tonal range or if I should expand further? I need to ask Daniel his opinion on how far this colour range should extend to, but I am excited about where this idea will take my brand!
