The Icon Handbook Research

I have recently looked at Jon Hicks work and specifically his icon designs, blogpost here, and for further research into my own icon development I took a look into Jon Hicks book – The Icon Handbook. I have included specific information that I found the most helpful for me, who is completely new to icons and iconography.

Chapter 5 – Drawing Icons

Rules for drawing-

The first rule is … there are no rules!

Goku, Dragonball Z

I found chapter 5 the most helpful to me in this book so I decided to sketch note some of the main points and tips so I can return to when designing my own icon set.  I have included an image of the sketchnotes I made below, they include key points I need to remember for future design work regarding icon design.

What did I learn?

I have learned key points and tips from Jon hicks and his expertise within this book. Personally, I felt like I learned the most from Chapter 5 and I got tips and tricks on how to use illustrator and photoshop in order to create icons reality to the right size and quality. I used the sketchnoting technique and with more doodles as I have looked at the importance of both in previous entries and I am trying to develop my visual literacy by doodling and sketchnoting information. Blogposts:

I find this technique helps me learn quicker, easier and more efficiently; I remember much more when I sketch and doodle it on a page and it even works on books as well as talks!

Moving further into this project I need to take the lessons I have learned from this book and these tips and tricks and apply them to my own designs. As a newbie to designing icons I want to make sure I create icons the correct size and quality for my travel app.
