Research for my Visual Marque

I have began the research process for the design of my own visual marque for my personal brand and I have started with the best place for quick gathering and inspiration… Pinterest.

I have made a Pinterest board dedicated to visual marques and pictograms, link here.

Visual Marques in brands

I have researched companies that use visual marques within their brands, I have included some below-

City of Melbourne-

I like the geometric forms within the City of Melbourne visual marque, the colours work great and the sharp points and triangles give a nice abstract geometric atmosphere. This approach is taking simple shapes and combining them to make an interesting form.

Firefox-

What I like about this Firefox visual marque is that it has a nice fluidity, the way the lines are positioned and curved alongside the colour palette gives a very nice calming, soothing effect. Again this visual marque has taken simples shapes and turned them into a more intricate form.

Personal brands

I decided to look at a few personal brands to get a good range of research before designing my own visual marque, I have put them into categories of how I feel their visual marques come across to the viewer/audience.

Geometric-

Daniel Rotter is a logo designer from Germany and he came up with this design below which I found effective for a visual marque, it is simple and uses geometric forms and it doesn’t need any colour to look finished and it is still strong without it.

Clever-

This graphic designers visual marque is clever as there is a hidden message within the typography of his name which is the glasses, and he had linked this same symbol into his visual marque. As a viewer you assume that this designer does in fact wears glasses and this is smart because he has used this to his design advantage and intertwined this aspect of his personality in a great way, it adds a nice personal touch to this brand.

Fun-

Professional designs can still be fun and creative and this designer has definitely gone down this route. It is bright, cheerful and fun and I think her choice of typography works well with this visual marque.

What did I learn?

From looking at a few business marks alongside personal brand visual marques I have learned that there is a very wide range of categories that they can come under. Overall I have learned that each of these visual marques aren’t overly complicated and have remained fairly simple in regards to structure, form and composition. I want my visual marques to remain simple but I still want it to represent me as a person and be creative but also professional, to get that right balance will be challenging but I want to work hard and design a great visual marque.
