Week 4- Visual Identity

Last weeks lecture (week 4) was based on visual marks and identies, we learned about how to create one and looked at popular examples of how well known brands use their visual marks. I will be making my own visual mark for my personal brand and Daniel set us a few tasks to get started with this part of building out brand and I have included those tasks below.

Task 1

One of this weeks tasks was to sketch objects using the drawing techniques we talked about in the visual identity lecture. The objects were the following:

  • iPad
  • Laptop
  • Camera
  • Sketchbook
  • Pencil
  • Browser
  • USB Stick
  • Paper
  • Television
  • Radio

My Sketches-

I decided to go for the shapes technique, I used very simple shapes and identified what they were, I then put them together to build that particular item. This approach was a good way to get me thinking about that shape and form before I began to sketch it.

Task 2

The second task was to pick 5 key words from my week 1 word association mind maps or bio and explore a range of ways to represent them visually. So I chose a few of my core values and I drew some symbols and pictograms that I felt represented that word, I did find it quite hard for some words especially, Honest, but I gave it my best shot.

My Initial sketches and ideas-

What is next?

After sketching a lot of different visual marks I want to select a few that I like in particular and push those designs forward and test them out and chose the visual mark that best suits me and my brand. I will refer to Daniel for some advice and guidance on which visual mark will suit my brand the best and container to work on them!

What did I learn?

Practicing drawing using solid shapes in the first task was a great exercise, it made me think about the form before I put pencil to paper. I enjoyed experimenting with pictograms and visual marks, despite the challenge I feel like I now have a good range to chose from and I will continue to build on my favourite sketches and ideas.
