Veerle Pieters

Veerle is a designer from Belgium with a very unique style of illustrating, she is a graphic/web designer and she has become a big person of interest to me as I get into illustration. Her website has been a great source of research and inspiration for me, she has sections for tutorials and articles based on all things design! I wanted to look at an artist who’s styles varies from the last artist/designers that I have looked at, so far Pieter’s work is definitely one of my favourites. Her work has a  fun and youthful feel and combined with a stunning colour palette with every illustration, I have included some of my favourite pieces of hers below.

The illustration above is made up with a number of random and simple shapes, deconstructing the elements in this illustration they are simple but when they are combined they create a complex and visually impressive piece. I like the smooth curves and choice of colours, I find her illustrations very relaxing to observe.

Cover design for Smashing Magazine print by Veerle Pieters

I came across her above cover design under one of her article on her website. I liked the composition and the added detail like the dots and wavy lines and curves, all of the components merged together create a very visually exciting piece. Her work tends to take a fun 2D approach with a number of geometrical vertical shapes, I love the simplicity and this is an approach I think I will take while developing my own travel app.

Trying out her style…

I completed a very quick illustrator task influenced by Veerle’s style and approach to illustrating, taking different simple shapes and uniting them to create another form and then filling it in with colour. I like this approach to design as I think it gives a modern effortless outcome.

Reflection

I loved looking at this artist, her work is relevant in todays ui/ux design trends and this research has benefitted me a lot. I will take this influence along with her tips and tricks and keep developing my illustration skills. comparing this to my last pocket profile which was researching Paddy Donnelly were his illustrative style was much more painterly, Veerle’s 2D style is more of the vibe and approach I want to take for my travel app.
