Paddy Donnelly

Paddy Donnelly is an Irish illustrator and he has over 15 years experience as an illustrator and designer. I have decided to research Paddy Donnelly’s work as I am researching a range of different artists and illustrators and I especially loved the texture within his work, and the subjects he decides to illustrate. I have always loved books and book illustrations and Paddy Donnelly is a great inspiration to me.

With looking at range of different illustrators I wanted to select artists with different illustrative techniques and styles. The image below is a book by Paddy Donnelly entitled, ‘Orla and the Serpent’s curse’ and I just loved the illustration so I had to include it, his work takes a very painterly approach, with a strong influence of the world around us, included the sea and many animals.

‘Pelican post’

Is the name of the illustration below and I came across this on his website and I loved the painterly technique, it’s simple with just enough detail.

Trying out his style-

I did a quick illustration of the pelican digitally and I found that it was actually rather difficult to get the same level of texture and that painterly feel but I am happy with my outcome, this was fun to experiment with.

Reflection

Paddy Donnelly was a really great pocket profile for me to do, I enjoy his style and I do like my quick re-creation. I am new to digital drawing but I am eager to learn and to keep improving, I still have a long way to go with my illustrations but I am enjoying the journey…
