Font blogs
I have decided to do blog research based on fonts to improve my understanding of the topic and to help me in the creation of my wordwork. I have included the two font blogs I have looked at below.
Fontsmith
Fontsmith is a type design company based in London and they have developed a strong library of beautiful fonts, I read on their About page that they are ‘constantly crafting and adding new fonts to keep our body of work fresh and relevant’, which I thought sounded perfect for me as I begin my journey to designing my own wordmark. I chose to research Fontsmith as their website has been really helpful for me when it comes to learning about type anatomy especially their blog post titled ‘A guide to type styles’ by Krista Radoeva link- here.
‘Type is constantly evolving, and one system doesn’t fit all.’
This particular blog post highlights the characteristics of different typefaces, it informed me that there are more categories and subcategories to explore than just the typical- sans, serif, script. The screen shot below is about geometric fonts and their characteristics, I also found it helpful that they provide a list of examples of type faces with that particularly style e.g, Geometric and those different characteristics.
Typewolf
Typewolf is a an independent site that features typefaces from all type foundries, it was created by Jeremiah Shoaf and his goal is to make Typewolf the absolute best resource available for everything related to typography on the web, with their brands streamline reading ‘What’s trending in type’, hinting to me that this is a modern, up to date website with current trending fonts. Jeremiah Shoaf is a designer and he wanted a type resource for people who design on the web, which is very beneficial for me! While scrolling this website I found a section titled’ Font recommendations and lists’ link- here
I have added a screen shot below. I found this section incredibly helpful as it highlighted the top fonts within the type face categories, so I was able to select which fonts I like and see the top ten fonts in that category.
I will use this tool to help choose fonts to experiment with for my own wordmark.
What did I learn?
Looking at these blogs I have gotten a better grasp for fonts and the most popular fonts used today. I am not sure which font I will used for my own word mark yet, but doing research like this helps me to widen my knowledge on fonts and will make it easier to choose a style path I want to venture down. I appreciate the modernistic and relevant purpose both blogs convey, it is important to me that I get a current feel to my brand and its’ wordmark that I will design. Typography is such a huge section of design and I want to research more blogs like the ones I have included in this post to further add to my knowledge and understanding.
