Week 3- Type and Wordmarks
Daniel talked about the importance of type in week 3’s lecture, especially when it comes to creating my word mark I need to know and understand type anatomy, its’ various elements and how each letter is structured.
Type Anatomy task
Daniel got us to write our own name and figure out its’ anatomy, this task was to help us better understand the elements of type that we can work with before creating our own word mark. I found this a useful task as I had never thought of my own name in this way and already I have a lot of ideas on how I can use this structure to change and manipulate my own word mark.
Kerning Exercise
I thought it would be beneficial to complete some kerning exercises on the website ‘kerntype’. After many attempts I got a few good scores and I got to work with a number of serif and sans serif typefaces, I have included screenshots below.
I got a final score of 89 out of 100 so I think with some more practise I will get better and will automatically know when and how to fix the kerning of a word, from doing this exercise I have realised that certain fonts are easier to fix and readjust the kerning of than others, the more simpler fonts are easier to kern than the more classic, serif type faces.

What did I learn?
Within week 3’s lecture I learned that type is a crucial part of creating your brand identity and word mark. I need to understand its’ anatomy and elements so I can produce the best word mark I can, I found it useful completing the above tasks as I have a better understanding of what I will be working with and what I can manipulate. Moving forward I need to do some word mark research and test out a range of different fonts with my name and make them my own with my own twists.
