Week 2 lecture- Monograms

Within week 2’s lecture Daniel explained monograms ,and I learned that I will be making my very own monogram for my personal brand. He explained what makes a good monogram and what areas are essential to research for this part of the project and in my own personal brand journey.  To get to grips with the idea of creating our own monogram Daniel had us complete a few tasks during Mondays class to get us started, I have included them below.

Monogram Name task

Our first task was to create our name using only three shapes, a triangle, circle and a square. I could either use a combination of the shapes or a single shape. I have included my two experiments below, the first one has all 3 three shapes included and the second one was using only semi circles.

Monogram Mood boards

First hand photo mood board

The mood board below has images I had taken (first hand) around Belfast, they include objects as well as graffiti and wall art that I felt resembled letters and letter type forms. This board is very abstract but I think that there are some interesting shapes that can be found in the most unlikely places off screen.

I also created a Pinterest board that is focused on monograms and letter forms that I felt myself gravitating towards. The link is here.

Reflection

I have leaned a great deal about monograms and how to create the best one I can. I enjoyed the task to create my own name using shapes as this gave me a feel for creating things minimally with simple shapes and forms, I prefer the first monogram were I used multiple shapes to create it, I like the soft rounded edges. I always create mood board before I begin a project because I feel as though it is the best way to get a wide range of ideas and concepts before starting into the project. I enjoyed creating the first hand image board as I want to get into off screen research more as I feel like it will help me develop as a designer if I broaden my research horizons. I will continue to get first hand, off screen research more in the future as I have found it very beneficial and it has helped me develop new and exciting ideas of my own monogram!
