Vic Bell

Vic Bell is an English illustrator, iconographer and brand designer, she has worked for a number a companies such as icons for Uber and rebrands for companies like Scratch. From researching her social media and website I found myself attracted to the style and layout of her website, it is interactive without being too ‘over the top’ but still fun to scroll through.

Icons

I decided to start by looking at her icon work as iconography was mentioned in last weeks lecture.

I came across these icons on Dribble and I enjoy the colour palette of the red icons, they are fun and very illustrative.

These set of blue icons are much more simplified than the first set I looked at, they seem more suited for a more serious type of app, whereas the red icons seem more whimsical and animated. The blue set of icons are more like the style I will probably end up going for when I design my own icons for my own travel app.

Illustrations

I included this illustration by Vic Bell as I love the simplicity of the overall piece, I like the shapes and forms in particular, it reminds me of a children’s book or gaming app. The chosen colour scheme is simplistic and complimentary and overall I just really enjoy this illustration style, this is a style I would like to try out as I would like to see if I could accomplish the same desired effect.

I also find myself attracted to this style of illustration, I am very fond of the very minimalistic background and how it draws my eyes to the centre character. Bell created this illustration for a company called Scratch, personally this illustration style reminds me of a banking website as it’s clean and simple but the character brings the overall image to life. This is another style and technique I would enjoy to recreate.

What did I learn?

I enjoy researching illustrators as this is a field I am very interested in, I like discovering new styles and seeing how every artist approaches projects differently! Overall I really love Vic’s style and passion for what she does. When scrolling through her website I noticed she included a quote about herself from a client and the client talked about how she can adapt feedback and this point is key to remember as a junior designer like me. I have learned that this is also another style I would like to try, especially with the creation of my icons I want to try the simplistic, minimalistic approach.
