Internet History
Week 10 lecture was based on the history of the web. Kyles presentation included information on the following topics, Sir Tim burners lee, Vannevar Bush and his vision for the computer, ARPANET, packet switching, web standards and why they are important and who sent the first email?
We looked at Sir Tim burners leee who is a British computer scientist and how he created the World Wide Web, the first web page went live on August 6, 1991. I have included an image of it below.
I found it fascinating looking at the first ever webpage and what was even more mind-blowing was that he created HTML and I have been creating my own webpage for my essay and with html and no css it looks exactly like the first ever webpage. After all these years the same process used in creating websites is the same and Tim Burners Lee’s process is still running and it works!
Web Standards
One of the sections of the lecture that I found thought provoking was the web standards and how every website needs them. Web standards are defined as a formal set of standards and technical specifications used to define aspects of the world wide web.
Before standards people were just building websites whatever way they wanted, some webpages you couldn’t view if you didn’t have internet explorer. When web standards were introduced, browser makers were encouraged to stick to a set of rules so it makes it easier for content creators and the users.
Why we need web standards:
- keeps the web free and accessible to all
- helps make source scolds simpler
- allows for backwards compatibility and validation
- help maintains better SEO
Reflection on this lecture…
This lecture reinforced the importance of the web and the internet. It made me reflect on what it would be like to have no internet, life would be so different for everyone! When looking at the first web page I thought it was crazy how I have been able to create the same thing but with todays technology and applications I am able to add a range of css that wasn’t as advanced back then. The technological world has developed so much since the first web page and it was refreshing and inspiring to see that in this lecture.
