Final 3 designs
I have taken my final 3 design sketches and began to build them on Adobe XD. I have decided to keep colour out of the equation for now as I am just focusing on form and composition. With keeping my designs just black and white, I can visualise how I want the outcome to look and focus on the form of the letters.
For the paragraph on the screen I have decided to go for a quote about the typeface Helvetica- “For me Helvetica is just this beautiful, timeless thing’’- Michael C. Place, it is from my previous research when I watched the film ‘Helvetica’. I felt like this simple quote summed up the type perfectly.
- The first design is the letters of the word Helvetica and they seem to be falling to the bottom of the screen. I like this affect, however I found it difficult to position the letters in the correct rotation to give the illusion that they are resting on each other. I do like this idea but my execution has some slight faults with the spacing and rotation.
- The second design is the letters all gathered in the centre and they are over lapping slightly. Here I have changed up the scale of each letter, enlarging some and shrinking others, I like this affect and I think it looks bold. However, I am unsure about the placement of my text, I don’t know if it lost under the C or if it would be suited in a different area of the screen.
- My last design is half of an N which is enlarged, focusing on the right hand side of the letter. On top of that I have placed the year in which the type was created- ‘1957’, I have cropped this so you are only able to see half of the numbers. I like how you are unable to tell if this is a letter or a shape. I think that this have created an interesting outcome, but I am unsure if it is too hard to make out.
What I have learned:
- From keeping it just black and white for now I could focus on the layout and the scale of the letters. I think this was a good decision because colour can come later.
- I also discovered that the simpler the screen is the better, I think it looks more sleek and easier to read. Less is more.
- Enlarging the letters makes the design more bold, dramatic and strong. I like the atmosphere is creates. It also creates the illusion that it is a shape and not a letter, it puts forward the question, when does a letter start to become a shape?
What’s next?:
Moving on from this I need to pick a colour scheme for my three screens, colours that suit the design and aren’t too overpowering. I think I also need to work on the placement of the small paragraph to ensure it is in the best spot and the appropriate size for the screen. I then need to pick a final screen from my chosen three.
