In Fridays class, Daniel asked us to get into pairs and answer questions handed out as if we were in a placement interview setting, me and Lauren interviewed each other, and then gave feedback after the interview.
After going home I had another look over the questions, and decided to prepare proper answers for them.
QUESTION SHEET 1
ANSWERS:
- I’m Beth, I’m 20 and do interaction design at ulster, I got into interaction design through always having an interest in art & design growing up, but then also having a keen interest in psychology.
- I looked at your case studies and (choose specific characteristics about the case studies and why you’d be a good match)
- My favourite would probably have to be my app mockups I created last year for my travel app Fossilized – this is because I enjoyed doing user research into children and also experimenting with vector art
- my branding project didn’t go as planned last year, it was a bumpy ride when creating my brand but I got there in the end with a final product I was really happy with. I did constant iterations throughout the semester and received feedback from my lecturer to get a second opinion to improve them. I also looked at other designers work constantly to inspire me and provide me with a wide variety of ideas to gain iterations from
- Great UI – Spotify design website. Great UX – Duolingo (have notes on this)
- (hand them a sketchbook or bring up your portfolio process case study) I would begin by brainstorming the project ideas whether this be post-its, or mind mapping. I would then move onto user research and do competitor analysis. I would then start sketching out the ideas I have in my head – doing many iterations under sometimes a short amount of time. After doing iterations I would then do low fidelity wireframes, do more user research and begin simple user testing, I’d then move onto higher fidelity mockups and continue user testing – this time do screen recordings and ask them to do tasks etc.
- I discover their needs by researching them as a whole at first, doing competitor research and reading reviews, doing surveys on them, creating user personas, creating user flows, creating mockups then asking them to do tasks, doing more surveys, and repeating the process over and over
- Hopefully a UX designer working on projects I’m passionate about, creating designs that help as many people as possible
QUESTION SHEET 2
- Creating as much equality within the tech industry as possible I think. Nowadays I think so so much of our lives are online, you can’t do anything without having to do something on a screen. This can be impossible for people who have visual impairments or any other disabilities, and also people who haven’t used technology a lot in their lives – like older people.
- A project I’m most proud of would probably have to be my app mockups I created last year for my travel app Fossilized – this is because I enjoyed doing user research into children and also experimenting with vector art
- (RESEARCH THIS IN MORE DETAIL)
- I would explain to them my point of view and the pros and cons of both arguments, I would speak to them in a tone that’s considering their argument, and together we can weigh up how both methods will be the best in the long run
- Looking at other designers work is a huge constant inspiration for me. My main goal with my work is to help people too, UX is essential to make sure less savvy people don’t get left behind, and I find a lot of meaning in my work through this
- I ask them specifics of what they don’t like about it, and then provide them with iterations of the design that they may prefer
- (mention case studies and the specifics of what you liked about their previous work, also the opportunities that puts them ahead of other companies)
- Probably AR within iPhones – take IKEA for example, this could be applied to so many things as its such a useful and diverse tool
WHAT I’VE LEARNED:
- I need to force myself to have more confidence in my speaking when under pressure – fake it till you make it!
- I must speak louder
- I need to take deeper breaths – this will allow me to think more clearly
- when questions are asked – take a second before you begin to start speaking
- When questions are asked – think back to times throughout your design career and let your brain wander across past and previous project struggles
