NOTES ON SYMBOLS AND VISUAL MARQUES:
TASKS:
Our tasks for this week are to…
1.) sketch the following imagery with the drawing techniques we talked about-
- ipad
- laptop
- camera
- sketchbook
- pencil
- browser
- USB stick
- paper
- television
- radio
I found it interesting doing this task. I enjoyed deconstructing these everyday objects into their most basic components and will continue to use this same process when creating my visual marque. Doing this made me inspired to go and create my own visual marque as it made me excited for the challenge of trying to represent myself visually with various different shapes.
2.) Choose 5 key words form our week 1 word associations and represent them visually-
mine were
- friendly
- bubbly
- passionate
- caring
- energetic
Through doing this exercise I found that imagery involving a lightbulb was really interesting to me, and it had a lot of potential for different outcomes.
DESIGNERS I WAS DRAWN TO:
TIM BOELARS:
JEROEN VAN EEERDEN:
IVAN BOBROV:
CREATING A PINTEREST BOARD FOR INSPIRATION:
I created a moodboard full of symbols and other various visual marques which inspired me. This was either because I was drawn to the design style, or else I just liked the object being represented/ the way it was being represented.
CREATING MY VISUAL MARQUE:
BRAINSTORMING POTENTIAL IMAGERY:
I began by highlighting my interests, characteristics, and things that I generally care about. I sketched imagery beside the key words in these mind maps to further help me think about visuals.
I created a second mind map purely about visuals I could potentially use. I wanted to have a marque that had boldness, thick lines, flat 2D shapes and represented either me as an individual or something I cared about. To summarise – this included something environmental or related to nature, something related to art/ design, or imagery representing how I want to have innovative designs and ideas.
REFINING MY IDEAS:
I decided on these two marques as I felt they were both bold and full of energy – which is exactly what I want my brand to come off as having. I used one of my icons from my iconset to create the first marque and then incorporated my monogram into the one below in the form of a lightbulb
DIGITISING MY FINAL IDEAS:
I digitised the monogram part of my lightbulb to be a different colour to the rest – similar to the designers I looked at above who also only used 2 colours in their logos. I made sure to use sections of various circle sizes similar to Bobrovs work above too
FEEDBACK AND FURTHER REFINEMENT:
After getting multiple peoples opinions on my marque including Daniels, I decided that I needed to make it more obviously a lightbulb and go back to one of my original design ideas. By flipping it 90 degrees as well as adding a circle around the filament it now looks much more obvious what the shape is supposed to be, and therefore as a result it will hopefully communicate what I’m trying to say a lot more easily.
