IXD103 – week 3 – Collaborative typefaces

TWO TYPEFACES – CREATED BY 60 DESIGNERS IN TOTAL

Both of these typefaces are created by a multitude of different people.  I love how each character is completely original in its own way because of this and i’m really inspired by many of the letterforms presented here.

Daniel Schrier’s “Social type” typeface

This typeface was a collaboration between 23 designers.  I particulaarly like how there are varying weights to each letter, and how some letters are filled in and others are not.  However, I feel this typeface could be made even more effective in maintaining more consistency throughout.  This could be done by having two or three letters for every style instead of just one.

Raissa Pardini’s “GROUP FONT” typeface

The start of the covid19 pandemic inspired Pardini to start a completely collaborative group project working on this typeface.  Pardini said that “Usually fonts are made of letters that follow a certain style,” but Group font is different. This new rule-breaking typeface is, again, purposely irregular as each letter and number has been crafted by a different designer.  37 creatives from all over the world united to design GROUP and raised money toward the research for Covid-19,

THE TAKEAWAY

This variety in typeface design is somehting that inspires me a lot as someone who is looking to create my own typeface.  I will definitely experiment with combining a variety of my own letters when creating designs – or even inclucing legible letters from other well known fonts and combining them with some more experimental designs similar to these.
