IXD104 – week 2 – Matt Yow’s iconography

WHAT HE HAS TAUGHT ME

Matt Yow specializes in designing brand identities,  visual systems, and holistic brand experiences.  I chose to research his work because I love the style of particularly his icon sets.  However as I was looking at his work I noticed how much I also liked his overall approach to app/ web design and brand identity in general.  He has made me realise how icon sets must work with the rest of the brand identity and shouldn’t be designed by themselves with no background information

ICON, LOGO, AND APP DESIGN FOR BUDGEE

Yow developed a brand strategy with a well thought out name.  The name Budgee suggests budgeting while also being a fun play on words.  The Budgee app square below works really well as its simple and shows the company’s monogram.

The apps colour scheme works well and is calming to the user as various shades of blue have been used.

I particularly like the blue highlight around specific UI cards that are selected, they look illuminated because of this and it gives the app a really fresh feel.  This is something ill consider when creating my own icons and UI cards for my own app.

ICON AND LOGO DESIGN FOR CONFIANT

Confiants icons, visual marque and colour scheme all work really well together in order to create an overall professional, put together, and interesting tone of voice.

I love how consistent and chunky the iconography of this company is.  Despite the companys purpose being in software protection which could be argued is a boring subject the icons work against the monotonous nature of the work involved.  They bring life and energy to the design of the identity and I think the glyph icon style helps to do this.
