Animation Studio- Week 4

Colour and Groupwork!

In class we started discussing colour! This is something I was very excited for, as I haven’t ever really explored colour up until recently, and I really want to better my use of it in my work.

Colour can make or break an artwork, it can make it visually stunning if done right. Colour contrast can help lead the eye, and I would love to be able to use it the way I see other artists do.

I have attempted colourful pieces in the past, relying exclusively on whether or not the steps I take feel right or not rather than really knowing what I was doing.

Colour being used as contrast is one of my favourite techniques in art, a beautiful demonstration being in this piece by Manon Auclair, on Instagram under the username @ethemos_art. The warm, bright orange eyes contrasting with the cooler greens and blues of the background.

As for the piece that I added colour to, I chose this cave scene, with a mixture of blues and yellows. I’m not quite satisfied with it, I think the textures aren’t quite as I want them, but i think if I added more detail I could bring it to a place where I’m happy. I really enjoy how blues and yellows contrast, and would like to use these colours further in future art.

Groupwork

This week we also switched groups, and I joined a new group with what I thought was a very interesting concept. Group 7’s concept is a tired office worker falls asleep and dreams about a robot mushroom world where a large robot is attacking. The protagonist fights the robot and deals a devastating punch that knocks the robot over, but then wakes up and sees his boss on the floor holding his now hurt face, and the protagonist realises that he has punched his boss, who he characterised as a huge evil robot in his dream.

The group hadn’t finalised their designs yet, so we, as our homework, divided up the different characters in the story and created possible designs for them. I drew up the tired office worker, trying to use simple shapes, making his head a rectangle as I thought this would help make animating easier. I thought we should exaggerate his eye bags and give him a slumped posture to show just how tired and overworked he is in the real world, then for his version in the mushroom world, remove the eye bags, make his eyes slightly more round and make him stand up straighter, making him look more awake.
