Animation Studio- Week 3

This week we explored tone and value, as well as furthered upon our group work.

Our task in class was to draw a tonal study of an item relevant to our groups, I went with a cap as this was one of the items that the hunter in my section would have had in his cabin.

This week we also swapped groups for the first time. I was not one of the people who moved this week. The new people in our group had some good criticisms and had things to add, we got a fresh perspective on the work we had done so far. They highlighted a few issues I had with the concept, which helped me speak up about my concerns as well. I was reluctant to previously as I thought everyone else was happy with the idea and I didn’t want to cause issues, but with the new people wanting to make changes I felt like I could too. I raised the issue that with everyone having entirely different worlds and plot lines to do, it didn’t feel like group work at all, and there wasn’t really a solid way of linking the sections together. I suggested instead of having a guy flick through the different channels on the TV, that he get sucked into it and physically travels through them all. People seemed to like my changes and I think it gives it better overall flow.

Our homework was to add more detail to our thumbnails using what we learned in class, although I did my own piece unrelated to my thumbnails.

I am not used to drawing backgrounds and scenery, it was never really something I had done before, but I really enjoyed playing around with the snow and tree textures for this piece. I watched a video on YouTube which helped a lot with the snow textures, linked below. I’m not quite happy with the front of the house, but I just didn’t have the time to work on it further.

Another one that I did is a cave scene. I used a solid brush along with an airbrush and looking back, I think the textures of these clash. But, making mistakes and realising them is how we learn, and with every piece I am improving, so I’m going to take what I’ve learned from this forward into the next drawings that I do.
