First Year Reflection

I made it the end of the first year. I went into this course not fully sure it was something I wanted to do I got doubts right after I finished apply to place and I was fully prepared to drop out after the first semester like my sister did but I didn’t! Even though there were times that I wanted to but they have been there ever since I had to do english as a class. I enjoyed myself more than I thought I would. Always set your expectations low.
If I were to rank the module it would be:

  1. 3D literacy
  2. Animated Narratives
  3. Animation Studio
  4. The world of animation

I really enjoyed 3 of these. I had fun getting to know a lot of cool new people and learning new skills. I loved 3D modelling and having stuff I create be used in a short film even if I am the one who has to create the short film. I didn’t like blogs they’re the bane of my existence and putting word limits on it makes it worse. I can’t write 2000 I can barely write 900 but we persevere and we write nonsense. I liked the lectures they all seem nice and stealthy sneaking up behind you. 10/10 would recommend this course to people who don’t like to quit stuff. Can’t wait for second year to do this again!

The time has come to finally put an end to this year.

This module was about  creating a 30-60 second short film with the theme journey were the models cannot have legs. I found it hard to come up with an idea but my group liked the idea about a wooden duck wanting a charcoal finish. we made a lot of changes to the idea and after the presentation before easter we came close to scrapping the entire idea all together and starting new cause of the feedback we got. The new suggested idea was to keep the setting and the main character of the duck and the one of the swan but to change the other 2 characters to a dragon and a wooden toy with metal parts. I got excited with the idea especially when I heard dragon, I love dragons, and started to sketch some ideas for it mainly for the dragon but I’m glad we did not do that cause I would have probably died of stress. The final idea was a wooden duck longing to be up on the shelf with the cool eagle cult. The blowtorch offers his help to get to the eagle do the damaged swans warning. When the duck reachs the eagles they push him off the shelf and into the furnace below killing to duck. It is a tragic tale about not trusting strangers. In all the ideratings of the story it always ending with the duck dying in a fire and we were not ever going to change that. I found designing characters easier in this module probably because the characters were not human and I like birds.

I was subconsciously drawn to the swan and was focusing my time on sketching the swan. You see the swan got burnt by the blowtorch half way through its carving and I like to think that the swan was being craved by the owner of the workshop and his daughter/granddaughter so when the swan got burnt he did not have the heart to throw it away. I found a lot of pretty swan sculptures and wooden carvings I liked them so much that I wanted to get into wood carving but I’m too poor to buy any of the tools required for it. I probably would have experimented more with what part of the swans body was unfinished but In my head it makes the most sense for them to start with the head and move down. When modelling the swan I would ask my friend how it looked and she kept saying it looked like a roast chicken. My first attempt at the swan had the mouth closed which was a big mistake cause I didn’t know how I would open it up. So I redid the head and neck to open the mouth up and also to get eyes in the model because I forgot them the first time. The wings were tricky because I didn’t know how to make them look like carved wings without it just looking like a weird looking slab of wood but I think the final look is pretty good. I would say that I could have experimented with using curves to make it look like feathers in a similar way I used curves to make the hair of the wooden horse. I think the texturing of the swan was pretty good I did have to change it slightly because of some feedback I got that one of the eyes was too hard to make out so I changed it so that both of the eyes were not burnt.

I was pretty attached to the idea of the environment being an old man’s personal workshop cause I found the inspo pics to be pretty and that an environment only lit by a fire could look cool so when Alec suggested it to be a factory I was very much against that and so was others in my team so we kept the workshop. I mainly started to create the environment myself cause I was scared I wasn’t contributing much to the group. I looked at a lot of different types of furnaces some the are more open some that are closed some that are round and some that need to be up against a wall. The first one I created was a round stand alone one that would’ve been in the centre on the workshop but then that evolved into being up against the wall in a smaller space with the mouth being out more so the duck can just fall into the fire. I liked how the final furnace came out but if I were to do it again I would’ve put more time into finding better textures and adding little details. I should’ve made a list of assets for the environment and sent it to my group in discord then I could’ve had more assets to make the workshop fuller and more like a workshop with tools, gadgets and completed/ uncompleted projects also I would of had more details about the possible owner of the workshop. I had Mike sneak up behind me whilst I was on facebook and pointed out that my environment needed skirting boards and I think it really tied the room together. I definitely should have labeled my materials when modelling cause when I had to find missing files the wrong material was appearing on the assets. Other things I could have added to the environment are stuff like photos tools such as chisels, saws, clamps, hammers and nails, puppets, logs and metal stuff like a soldering iron. I looked at inspiration on the internet and also at my grandads place since he also had a little workshop in his house (which was mostly just a shed in his garden) and focused at what they all have in common and focused on those first before creating the other stuff.

When appending the models to the environment I had to change the size of a lot of things so next time I would properly make a scale sheet or something so the size of things are consistent and there would not be any need to resize any of the assets. Also when appending assets I think it may have broken my shape keys on the swan model and I tried to fix it but they just were not working so I carried on without them as it was taking up my animating time.

With all the furnaces I tested the amount of fire light that would expel from the furnace and with the final furnace I tested to see the strength and colour would be best for the environment. If I could have done more for the environment I would have added other little light like fairy lights or toys that have light elements to it. One of the models I was working on that didn’t get finished was a little grim reaper sculpture that had a little lantern on the scythe and it would have been like a little omen to the ending of the animation. I could have figured out how to add beams of moonlight coming through the window to add some effect and it could have been pretty. I tried using fill lights and background lights (I think that is what they are called) to light the scenes and it took some trial and error to get the correct power and colour of light so it wasn’t so harsh and out of place. I could have possibly spent more time on the lighting but I thought it was good and that’s enough for me.

I found animating in 3D was easier than in 2D as I didn’t have to draw out many frames and editing the timing was much easier. The undo button has been my best friend with the amount of mistakes I have made but sometime my mistake was too far back and the only thing you can do is delete the whole thing. I could make changes to one element and I didn’t have to do it for other frames.

When rendering the animation I was terrified for my computer as it sounded like a fighter jet taking off similar to how it sounds when I start playing the sims with mods and the room gets a little bit hotter. I’m glad the rendering time was only a few minutes since we were using eevee and it could have taken half an hour or more.

When I saw the groups for this module I was a bit more relieved since I was in a group previously with Niamh for the animation studio module and briefly with Rebecca in the earlier stages of said module and they were pleasant to work with. I haven’t been in a group with Nathan before so I was a bit nervous working with him but I found him to be a hardworking individual who you would want to be in a group with. There was some time I wish the communication was better and I’m also at fault with not replying to my teammates but I think the communication got better over time. I would work with these people again. I think I became more comfortable working in a group and I enjoyed working in this group.

Doing presentations was probably the hardest part of this module because I can’t talk about what I’m doing for some reason. The amount of time I just wanted to say “this is a swan have a good day” and just leave. I prefer to let my work speak for itself, mostly I’m better written down with multiple drafts to actually think about what I’m saying

I would have to say that this module was probably my second favourite out of this year. I really enjoyed 3D modelling and dusting off my animating skills in Blender which still could use some work that I’m excited to do. My favourite part was modelling assets and creating the environment. I think I need to work on constraints and creating shape keys which was new to me this module. I feel like I was better at time management on this module since I wasn’t animating up to the last second and I had time to make changes to my animations if there was any problems with them but there wasn’t. YAY!

I would rate this module a 8.5/10 It could improve by letting people choose their groups and having less presentations as well as reducing the amount of words I have to write. I’m not good a writing why do I have to do it in an animation course. I enjoyed this module none the less and I’m excited to evolve my skills learnt in this module.

My character to model was the swan. I took the body from my first attempt and tried to fix the head, neck and wings. The wings were a nightmare to model even with reference photos. I am pleased with how the model came out though if I was going to do this again I would’ve modelled the character in an easier pose to rig as when I was rigging it I tried to add IK to it and I think it was due to how I modelled it that it wasn’t working.

I textured my model using substance painter and I found it a bit difficult to make it looked burnt and not just dirty. I did have to change the texture on the eyes as the one on the burnt side of the swans face was hard to see.

When rigging my model I tried to use ik in the wing and neck but it wasn’t working not sure if it had to do with the number of bones in the wing or not and in the neck i think it might be how I modeled it that made it not work. I used shape key on the eyelids and they worked in the swan file but when I appended the swan to the environment it no longer worked and by that point I was tired so I just animated without them.

test animation:

I wanted the workshop to sort of look like a personal workshop in someone’s family home. If i had more time I would’ve created little nick nacks and more toys/sculptures for the shelves as well as tools to make it look more like someone uses it regularly and stuff. I do like how the workshop ended up looking like. I created the furnace, 2 tables, a couple of boxes,  a stool, hooks and apron, a wooden horse and a shelving unit.

I found animating a bit hard my main problem was timing I found I was going too fast and had to slow it down. The main source of lighting is from the furnace and a lot of my scenes are from the inside of the box so I had to add some extra lights to make the characters visible.

It was hard to find swan noises that would fit the swans movements cause no one wants to record a swan and let people use it for free like come on I just want a single swan honk. Rebecca created a google drive with a lot of different sounds to use for the animation. I think it came out alright.

Nathan edited the different renders together to produce the final animation.

For this module we were put into groups to work on a 30-60 second short film based on the theme journey. Our group had 2 initial ideas 1 being about a group of toys going down a hill and the other being about a wooden duck jumping into fire. As a group we decided on the wooden duck story.

The first draft of the story being that the wooden duck was jealous of the other wooden toys that had pyrographic designs on them. The duck had the idea of asking the blowtorch to help him with the burning process but the blowtorch was out of juice. The blowtorch suggested that the duck should go to the furnace to get a nice charcoal finish. The duck with the help of his buddy the wooden car, to the protesting of an old burnt swan, jump into the fire. Below are the sketches I did as potential designs of characters and background sculptures/characters.

I found myself drawn to the character of the swan so it was decided I would be designing and modelling the swan. I looked up swan sculptures, burnt wood and wooden carvings as inspiration for the character. I wanted the character to have an angelic feel for the top part being smoother and sleeker than the bottom as the character got burnt before it was finished and that’s the reason it wants to warn the duck cause it doesn’t want the duck to end up like them. Below is the final design and the first attempt of the model.

I took it upon myself to design and make the workshop because I was worried I wasn’t pulling my weight in the group. I got really into this and focused a lot of my time into modelling. I sketched a design that I liked and modelled different types of furnaces:

We each did an individual storyboard then someone combined them into one. We lost quite a bit of time on this which could’ve been used for the 3D previs.

My storyboards:

‘Final’ storyboard

After the feedback we got from the presentation that day the team felt pretty defeated and wanted to start again with a new story but after sharing a view ideas we felt reinvigorated with our idea and made some changes. we decided to scrap the car character and replace him with a group of eagles. we wanted to keep the bird theme with the wooden characters. The story now is that the duck wants be on the shelf with the eagles and be their friend. The swan warns the duck about them but the duck ignores them when the blowtorch comes and offers his help to get the duck up there. When the duck reachs the eagles they throw them in the furnace cause the duck isn’t designed like them. With there being little time left only one person in our group, Niamh, drew out the storyboard and we didn’t have time to create a full 3D previs.

Poster for Korea- A Reflection

Categories: The World of Animation

For this module we were in groups to research a poster to demonstrate our understanding of the history of a nation’s animation.

I didn’t know what country to do until I was approached by my bud Ciaran to join the Korean group and after not a long amount of consideration I said yes. There ended up being 6 people in my group. I never been a fan of research I prefer actually doing things but I actually found it rather interesting.

On the first week we went through the history of Korean animation as a whole and tried to decide the different aspects we could talk about. I wrote a short amount of Korean history mostly copying and pasting from different websites. I also got ‘Animation: the Global History’ by Maureen Furniss as I thought it may have some useful information, it had half a page of information.

I found some show that I used to watch that were animated in korea like kung fu dino posse and the simpsons.

I then decided to look into the history of genres and the change in popularity. I found it quite hard to research as korea has had little documentation of animation and it’s also not that popular of a media in korea. Most Korean animation in the early years were stolen japanese anime dubbed and slightly changed to korean. I found some interesting information like how a korean animation studio is making a film about jesus which would be the first ever film made by this studio and in 1983 there was a david and goliath movie. I was worried that I might have chosen the wrong area to look at as I thought I wouldn’t get enough information to warrant a section on the poster. The following is my little ‘script’ for the poster:

Genre

The first animations from Korea were educational videos and government propaganda films produced during the cold war. From then they moved onto more typical children’s animation producing folktales and comic strip adaptations with Hong Gil-dong being the first animated feature in 1967. In the 90’s with the rise of rebellion against traditions in pop-culture saw the first adult animations being produced which is 50 years later than in America though there still aren’t many adult animated shows in Korea as the norm is still that animation is childish and dumb. As the popularity of Korean horror film grows so does the animated horror with more horror is being made in the past decade then there has been since. With some of the more noticeable ones being Seoul Station, an animated prequel of sorts for the movie Train to Busan, and Beauty Water which was based off a webtoons comic called Tales of the unusual. As of July 2023, it is reported that fantasy and science fiction were the preferred genre in animation as shown throughout the years of fairytale adaptations, such as Yobi, the Five tailed Fox, and robot type films such as Robot Taekwon.

I was scared I may not have enough information compared to the rest of my group especially when I compared my section to others but I felt like I didn’t have enough time to research a whole new section so I would say that if I had to do this again I would have started writing my section earlier so I could have enough time to make changes.

When discussing the design of the poster there was a heated debate on the orientation of the poster sadly I was on the losing side of landscape, LANDSCAPE FOREVER!!! I still believe landscape would be better.

If we were to do the poster again I would add more photos relevant to my topic and maybe reduce the amount of words but I think the poster came out beautifully.

I think I could’ve presented the poster better, I’m not great at speaking so doing any sort of presentation is a great anxiety for me but I think I did better than the first presentation and that’s what matters. I was so happy when it was over.

I enjoyed working with this group. The excitement and energy was all high and everyone was engaged in the work. The communication was excellent and I felt like I understood the task and what to do when they described it again cause I was confused. Definitely would want to work with them again. Rae was absolutely jepic doing more than necessary with drawing their own character to put onto the poster as well as doing two different topics

Overall this module has been ok. I still prefer actually doing animation stuff than research stuff but I found the topic riveting. I found the other posters interesting and since we were the only group doing korea I found it interesting what different angles the other group. If I didn’t join Korea I would’ve liked to have done French or Russian as I haven’t had any previous knowledge about them and I thought it would be fun to learn about.

The Hunter – Reflective Blog

Categories: The World of Animation

For this assignment we were to analyse, in groups, a short film. My group had the short film called ‘The Hunter’, a film noir horror film about a man who hunts and kills wendigo like creatures.

I was a bit worried going into this module as I have a very hard time at analysing and trying to say why someone has done something. My group decided to focus on 4 aspects of the film- genre, mise en scene, camera and lighting. I was willing to do either mise en scene or lighting so at a flip of a coin I ended up doing lighting. I wished the presentation went better but my nerves got the better of me and as soon as I started talking my brain sort of malfunctioned.

Since the film had a lot of film noir traits I started looking into how the typical film noir is lighted and how it is used to create depth and stuff. The following are the points I had hoped to say during my presentation:

  • In the first scene the light is used to direct the viewer’s eyes to the dead body pointing out the injuries and the broken skull mask on its faces whilst keeping the hunter’s face and features in shadow creating the mystery of the hunter and his connection to the body.
  • Uses the venetian blinds setup which is famous a trick used in many noir films hence emphasising the genre
  • Main sources of light are from windows and doors which are primarily behind the hunter keeping him in shadows while creating this aura around him which can show how the hunter may not be of this world adding to the mystery of who the hunter himself may be.
  • When the wendigo shows up it is light in a way with the light facing down at the hunter suggesting that the wendigo is perhaps of a higher status or power than the hunter. The aura that is created by the light is stronger than the one on the hunter. The lighting almost suggests that the wendigo is from a different world with the lighting coming through the windows looking like portals
  • In the final scene the light seems to be pointing at the dead emphasising his injuries which look like a mirror image to the first body showing that they were the same type of creatures

I found working in a group quite useful and they gave me ideas of how to actually do the assignment. I wish I was able to give my part of the presentation without messing up but you can’t change the past. I’m kinda glad to have this module to try and get better at analysing or at least have a better understanding about the 4 pillars of filmmaking.

Assignment 2 Reflection

Categories: 3D literacy

I was excited to start assignment 2 as I’m really enjoying doing this 3D stuff and I’m happy with the outcome of my character. I tried to sketch a design that looked like it was from the movie hotel transylvania but I’m not sure I achieved that. My favourite part was sculpting the head it took a bit of time but I believe I managed to get it looking like my sketches. I did discover some problems with the model as I was posing it like the hat moving when I was rotating the arms and black marks appearing in some area. If I had the time I would go back and try to fix it as well as making some changes but other than that I feel like it came out to a standard I was happy with. If I was to do this again I think I would try and manage my time better so I could have better sketches of my character and have time to fix any mistakes that may occur. I still need to work on my uv mapping skills as that what I found the hardest and what took alot of my time. I had a lot of fun working on this assignment and I really want to model more characters in the future

Week 9- Constructing a humanoid character with good typology

No comments yet

Categories: 3D literacy

This week we learnt about typology and how creating a model with good typology is important in animation. I had a better time with this than last week’s sculpting. I enjoyed making the head of the model and spend a while trying to make the lips look like lips. It was hard trying to get the right proportions and looking at it I’m still question if I did but I still think it looks great. I made some slight changes to my design as some elements didn’t look right to me in a 3d space compared to the 2d sketches. I had to have a couple of tries on making the clothes but I eventually managed to get it looking good enough. Overall the process of making this model has been a journey that I think was worth it.
