Animation Studio Reflection (YR1, Semester 1)

Through-out the time I spent on the course, I found this module quite informative and enjoyable to complete. I had previous experience with animation in a previous course but I feel as though I only began understanding things better through the exercises we completed on this module.

I am overall not very happy with the work I produced as I feel as though I could’ve done better if I had completed more studies and research on the things that we discussed throughout the module. I unfortunately ran into problems with my health that made working on some tasks hard to get through, but I would like to improve on these areas when I move on to the next module. I had the most fun with the character exploration and exercises as character design is what I’m most interested in improving, coming up with character ideas with a group was also very enjoyable.

I found myself struggling a bit when it came to group work as I felt very nervous about sharing my work, I am not very experienced with 2D art and was not confident in showing my work with others who have way more experience and skill. I realise that this was not the correct way to handle things as it made it a little stressful for others to organise their own work (e.g. Animatics/storyboards). I have fully acknowledged this and will be more open with my work in group work despite my confidence.  Overall, I enjoyed the idea- brainstorming that came with the work and loved to see the work that others in my group created.

If I were to start the module again, I would ensure that I completed the work when given to avoid stress further on into the course. I would also give myself some more study time to make sure that I fully understand the content that we learn, and that I improve my own personal 2D skills.

To improve my animations, I will need to spend more time working on my timing and spacing. I noticed that my animations are not fluid but are quite choppy and rigid. Doing some personal exercises that would focus on these two aspects would help build my understanding and hopefully improve my animations as a whole. I could start creating some weekly animated gifs based on my own interests to slowly build up my skills and have a fun way to track my progress.

Something that I think I did well in this module was compromise during the group work. There were some things that I wasn’t too fond of as the group kept expanding but I knew that in a group that you can’t have everything the way you want it.

I think that this module really helped me understand which areas I needed to improve on and gave me ways & information that I could use to expand my skills. I am looking forward to improving and using what I’ve learnt from this module in the next semester.
