Composition & Perspective

This week we learnt about “Composition & Perspective” and how we can use these to improve our animations.

We were then given three tasks to complete by next class, these were:

  • 3 draw overs that involve one & two point perspective from our favourite shows
  • 3 thumbnails of master studies
  • 6 thumbnails of composition studies based on our group world

It was once I started this task that I realised that I struggled with recognising and understanding certain perspectives/compositions. I couldn’t seem to tell if what I thought was a certain perspective actually was what I thought it was .For example; If something wasn’t extremely obvious, like a long hallway being a one-point perspective, I couldn’t seem to tell which perspective it was. This was apparent when looking at my draw overs.

For my draw overs, I chose three scenes from Violet Evergarden.  I managed to grab two one point perspectives from Violet Evergarden that showcase two emotional moments that are framed fittingly. However, I am unsure if the image I grabbed for the two point perspective is truly a two point perspective or if the building is throwing me off.

For my master studies, I decided to use shots from “Kimi no na wa”, “Anastasia” and “Beauty and the Beast”.  The “Kimi no na wa” and “Beauty and the Beast” shots showcase a one point-perspective whereas the “Anastasia” shot is an example of the rule of thirds.

Since we had decided on “Summon a Demon Friend” for our group prompt, the 6 thumbnails were based on this.

I had a lot of difficulty with this task this week, which highlights an area that I will need to do further research and study to understand it correctly. I understand that this is an extremely important skill to have as an animator as it can properly express the tone and storytelling of the animation. I will be continuing to focus on this moving forward.
