Worldbuild Evaluation

For this semester I was tasked with working in a team with other members of my class to develop our own world and then create an eight second animation based on this world. Overall I enjoyed the module as it gave me more insight into the production and pre-production process when making an animated short. I’m proud of how the final animation looks and moves

Throughout the assignment I enjoyed the design elements, such as the character and background designing as it’s an area I feel I’m most comfortable in. With my character designs I felt I was able to portray the type of personality that I wanted to give them successfully. I also felt that I was able to include some interesting shots within my animation and push myself in experimenting with different perspective shots. I had previous experience with animating before joining the course and from comparing my past work to the work I’ve completed I have definitely improved in terms of the overall look on the animation (fluidity, line-art etc.) Something that I struggled with in the project however I did struggle with the tone and color studies and coming up with different palettes that could be used within the animation

For me I feel that, in order to improve my animation practice, I need to take more time collecting and studying visual references when animating certain objects or characters, for example, the scene where the pigeon gets ready to take off and fly away. I feel like I didn’t collect enough visual reference which would have helped me understand the timing a bit better. I also need to do more research on color palettes to better understand how to create and include them within the animation in a way that’s visually appealing.

I had experience working with others to create an animation from my previous course so I had an idea of what to expect when we were given the assignment. However one of the issues that I ran into while working with others was mainly communication and being unable to properly communicate ideas with the rest of my team as I prefer working individually when creating a world, this led to some confusion among the team. There were also communication issues when it came to figuring out what work needed to be done. These issues made me appreciate the importance of good communication and gaining feedback from others in the group as I found it easier to make any changes to the backgrounds and character designs.

If I were to redo the module I would try and be more experimental with different animation styles as I feel I didn’t experiment enough in the initial design stages, I would also try and give the animation a more distinct theme/genre to follow as this would’ve maybe made it easier to create color palettes for the animation. I would also try to be more clear in the communication of my ideas to the rest of my team and maybe organize weekly meetings with my team to get updates on the work that has been completed.
