Modelling
For this week’s assignment we were given the task of modelling and texturing a sword. I had previous experience in modelling a sword in Blender so I didn’t find the modelling process too difficult. For the main body of the sword I scaled a cube and then applied a mirror modifier to make the sword appear symmetrical.
When first making the blade I first tried cutting a shape for the blade using the knife tool and then extruding it upwards, however this didn’t give me the shape I wanted. During my second attempt I instead ‘inset’ the top faces of the cube and extruded them, which gave me a cleaner shape and moved the vertices at the top to create the point of the sword.
I wanted to add chips to the sword and tried creating them using the knife tool and then filling in the empty faces but this didn’t give me the effect I wanted, upon further research I then decided to experiment with the Boolean modifier which gave me the cuts that I wanted to add.
For the handle of the sword I used the ‘inset’ and ‘extrude’ tools to add details to a cylinder and then used a sphere for the gem at the bottom of the sword For the bandage I used loop cuts and then extruded some of the faces before adding a bevel. Once I was happy with the model I applied the mirror modifier and joined all the objects together.
Texturing
The trickier part of the assignment came from adding seams to the model which became a process of trial and error, for example when I applied the textures I noticed that the gem had an obvious seam running through the centre so I had to change its seam. Once I was happy with the seams I exported the layout and transferred it to my drawing software to add textures. I had to rearrange the textures a few times until I was happy with the way the model looked.
