Animation – Storyboarding

Cartoon Network Idents

In our animation workshop on Thursday we were taught about storyboarding and how animators use them to plan the main poses of their animations. For this exercise we looked at Cartoon Network idents and using these videos, created our own story boards for the animation. To do this we went frame by frame and made quick sketches each time the poses became significantly different as to plan out the main movements in each point of the animation.

Using what I learnt from that workshop I created a short storyboard for the animation I’m planning to make for the brief.

I really enjoyed this workshop as it broke down the animation process and gave me the opportunity to understand how animation really works.

Animation – Ideas

Initial Ideas

The list above were the first ideas I had for the Animation brief we were given, to create a short animation for Ulster University’s logo. From these ideas I narrowed it down to the main ones I liked and felt I could make something out of as shown below from my sketchbook.

After having all my ideas laid out in front of me, I then chose my three favourites to narrow it down to the final idea.In the end I chose the third idea above, the Bat Signal inspired animation. This is because I thought it was a fun idea and I had a clear image of how I wanted the final outcome to look in mind.
