Denim Challenge

Conclusion

In conclusion, I like how the jeans turned out, I’m glad I was able to rework them. I think I answered the brief well.  I experimented by using different types of denim, fabrics, stitching, embroidery and wonder web. I think it fits the 70s theme and displays my chosen colour pallet and ideas. However, I think I could of improved by measuring the cuffs at the bottom of the flares more effectively so they would match better. I also think I could of been a lot neater with the stitching and made the belt longer so it would tie a lot more efficiently. Overall, I have enjoyed this workshop as a whole and I’ve learnt so many new techniques and skills that I enjoy. I hope to keep using these new skills, my favourite was weaving.

Demin Challenge

I wated to included some colour at the front of the jeans so I made embroidery stitches to create a design around the front pocket.

Flower Power

To finish this project I stitched on yellow, pink, blue and orange fabric flowers at the end of my jeans. I wanted to relate this to my chosen colour pallet but also the flowery jeans I illustrated on my mood board.

I started by pinning the flowers in place to see where abouts I wanted them on the flares.

I used threads similar to the colours of the flowers.

Denim Challenge

I continued this project by stitching a denim cuff around the end of the flare’s legs. I used dark thread to try and hide the stitching as best as I could. I did this by measuring the width and length, marking out the measurements and then cutting this out.  I used pins to hold the denim strip in place so I could careful secure this by stitching.

Before

After

Embroidery

I used embroidery to create decorative stitching to add pops of colour and mark making to my flares. I started by using white charcoal to mark out where the thread would be stitch.

I cut out a piece of fabric to stitch to my to my flares. I have used this fabric throughout my textile work.

Creating a Belt

I measured and cut a denim belt as an accessories to the flares that can be tied or loosened.

Demin Challenge

Experimenting with Denim

We were tasked with independently making something out of denim. I really wanted to rework my jeans so that I would be able to revive them and wear them again, and use some of the skills I had learnt for example, embroidery, stitching and using wonder web.  I made sure to use colours that where displayed throughout my textile work and my mood board. The colours yellow, blue, orange and pink when included heavily in this project. I also wanted to represents my chosen theme, ’70’s layers.’ I did this by using denim flares and stitched flowers, which where popularised in this decade.

The Process

I began by cutting out a strip of dark denim jeans. I then measured the length and height of my back pockets on my light denim flares.

I then marked and made dark denim pockets.

Next I cut and adjusted the dark denim patches to size, I pinned these on to see how they would fit.

Using Wonder Web

I used wonder web to attached a denim patch and a star patch to the flares. I wanted to include this star patch as there is a lot of star elements in my textile work.

Embroidery, Quick Drawings and Collages.

Making Our Own Collages

For the last part of this workshop we were asked to create our own collage, by creating a series of rapid drawings quickly of fabrics on the floor that was laid out in front of us. We then drew our partner. I took the approach of layering the paper first then drawing over the top.

Tie Dye and Weaving Workshop

Conclusion

In conclusion I really enjoyed this workshop a lot, I’m glad to have learnt new skills that I would love to further in. I’ve learnt that there is so much possibilities with textiles and really liked this workshop as a whole. Overall I think I answered the brief well enough, however I think I could of improved by securing my weave better at the top so I wouldn’t have lost a bit of fabric. I’m glad I tried my best in this workshop and explored experimental areas.

Tie Dye and Weaving Workshop

Weaving

For this workshop we were tasked with created a weaving piece by using different sources of materials or fabrics. I used plastic bags, lace and fabrics thick and thin.

Creating a Loom

The first step was to create a loom and weave my fabrics through. I did this by wrapping string around card and securing it at the back. It was important that the string wasn’t wrapped too tight as this would cause the card to bend, or too lightly as the weave would fall apart.

Weaving Fabric

When weaving its important to weave the fabric through the opposite way round to the first piece and make sure to skip a string at a time.

I tired to best use colours that represented my previous work and mood board. Once I had removed the weave from the card board I tied pieces of string together and then cleaned up the edges by removing the excess fabrics.

The Result

I ending up loving my weave. I would try this technique again it was so fun.

Tie Dye and Weaving Workshop

Developing my Design

To enhance my fabric further I used denim, embroidery thread, flower fabrics and buttons to make the piece more interesting to look at.  I wanted to create flowers as this fits with my textile project of the ‘Flower Power’ lifestyle of the 70s. Here is the process.

Attaching the Denim

I attached denim by using the embroidery thread to create the stigma of the flower.

I continued by stitching yellow on the fabric to make the petals. I also attached buttons.

The Result

I enjoyed this process, I liked being able to take an idea and develop or alter it.
