Classwork Task
Our lecture taught us how to block out a character model for us to then sculpt. With some help from my tutor, was able able to make myself a model and sculpt it. Although unfinished, it did provided me the basics on how to block out a model and sculpt with it.
One of big issues during development was the hands. The figures of my hands fused together when I was about to start sculpting it. It was hard to smooth out the fingers, especially the in-betweens. What’s worse is that my actions to smoothen the hand didn’t mirror over to the other and it was on the right axis on where to mirror the actions too. I eventually discussed this with Mike and told me to not think about it as next week’s task we’re doing retopology.
Homework Task
our homework was to create a character based on hotel Transylvania, as well as an associated prop.
Before I started drawing I to look up the concept art for the film as they’re all drawn in 2D and I felt it would help me when creating the character designs.
Images I used for references:
Concept 1) Sea Monster
The idea was based on my research on Hotel Transylvania and how the main monster cast are all based on popular classical Universal monsters eg: Drac is based on Count Dracula, Frank is based on Frankenstein’s Monster. I looked up the roster of the monsters and there was one that wasn’t part of the initial cast and that was “The Creature from the Black Lagoon”.
I had to look at these images because I had a hard time trying to figure out how to draw the creature’s mouth in Genndy’s style.

Character concept 2) The Human Fly
This character was based on the fly because even though I couldn’t think of a theming for a monster as all the cast has filled in that slot but I then remembered that all of the cast are based on black-and-white film monsters so I decide to base this monster on another common theme in old school horror films, “giant mutant bugs”. There were so many mutant themed bugs ranging from “THEM”, based on giant ants, and “The Black Scorpion”, based on giant scorpions. The one I decide to base my character on was the fly from the fly, specifically the original 1940 version instead of its remake.

Character concept 3) Scarecrow
this one is just simple. Due to Hotel Transylvania being themed around monsters it’s monsters are also iconic Halloween monster so I thought of creating a common halloween-theme monster and the most well-know iconography of Halloween are jack-o-lanterns. I decided to base it on a scarecrow as media tends to represent it having a pumpkin for a head.

(my finalised idea that I would go with would be the scarecrow as I felt i could achieve its design in 3D compared to the other designs)
