This week for homework as the first assignment I had to choose three characters from an animated film/tv show that I like. The assignment was to draw the body frame of my chosen character on our chosen drawing software. I love 3D animation and Marvel so my first character was Miles morales from Spiderman into the spider-verse. The animation in this film is so diverse and impressive that it only felt right to choose this character.
The next film I chose had to be a Disney Pixar film because there isn’t a soul on earth who doesn’t enjoy those movies. The animation in these films is what made my interest in animation spark and I have to thank it for leading me here. The movie ‘Luca’ was released in 2021 and it has a special place in my heart, its film is heart-wrenching and adorable. I chose the character Alberto.
Finally, I decided that I wanted to choose a 2D character as my last. I don’t watch as many 2D animations as I probably should… being an animation student and all! Recently I have begun watching Bob’s burgers and the character Tina never fails to crack me up. I had some trouble with Tina’s character because I wasn’t used to the abnormal shapes in her head as you can see in the two close-up drawings of her head. I need to practice the cartoon style more and venture away from Pixar and realism.
This project was interesting because I have never done character design before. I found it a lot easier because we were told to trace but in the future I’m not sure how I’ll feel in the future about this assignment with creating our own characters but I am interested to see how it will go.
