Herb Lubalin
Born in 1918, Herb Lubalin was a typography designer and graphic designer based in the United States of America working on all mannerisms of graphic design and visual arts over his career.[1] In addition to his work with typography, Lubalin had also worked alongside Ralph Ginsburg who was a renowned author and publication designer at the time who focused the majority of his work towards magazine publication throughout his career. Lubalin had worked with Ginzburg in creating three variations of the Ginzburg magazines over the years including Eros, Fact and Avant Garde which later became a huge influence for the typeface Herb Lubalin designed, Avant Garde.[2]
One of Herb Lubalin’s most recognisable projects is the creation of the typeface Avant Garde which he created for his Internation Typeface Corporation (ITC) in 1970, the typeface became extremely popular towards the end of the 1900’s moving forward into the 2000’s and has been featured in numerous logo designs and corporate identities throughout the years including Adidas, Nutella, Billabong, Groupon and the first iteration of the Microsoft logo back in 1982.[3] ITC Avant Garde is a geometric sans-serif typeface that shares many of the same principles to Futura and is based on similar ideas and principles to previous design movements such as the Bauhaus, Constructivist and the Swiss Design movement throughout the 1900’s.
