Wolfgang Weingart
Wolfgang Weingart is possibly one of the most influential designers in history, best known for his work as a graphic designer and typographer. Born in 1941, Wolfgang Weingart went on to study typography in typesetting, linocutting and woodblock printing which had a huge influence on his work throughout his career.[1]
His work with typography and creating form based on lettering from typefaces became a huge part of his recognition in the design industry, his work with typography led Wolfgang Weingart to become a forefront designer of the Swiss Typography movement and is often considered as the father of the New Wave Typography movement commonly referred to as Swiss Punk. This Swiss Punk style to typography and design became influential throughout the postmodernist movement as his design work featured a slight anarchist feel sharing some of the same ideas to that of the postmodernist movement throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s.[2]
After watching a video of Wolfgang Weingart’s work and his approach to design I found it extremely interesting the way he uses real world materials to create his designs and add depth and texture to his work. In the video he had used a crumpled up tissue to add texture and patterns to his work to make it more interesting to the viewer and tie in with the postmodernist philosophies he had links too.
I have included some of Wolfgang Weingart’s work below to give you an idea on how he utilised typography and other materials to create his work.
