Pocket Profile – Vaughan Oliver

Vaughan Oliver

Born in 1957, Vaughan Oliver was a British graphic designer who is widely recognised from his work with design studios and record labels, some of his most notable work coming from these design studio projects such as v23 and 23 Envelope. Vaughan Oliver was an avid fan of music and through this he gained a sudden love for graphic design, his passion for music carried through into his career as a graphic designer as the v23 and 23 Envelope design studios were in close contact with the 4AD record label, which was a popular record label towards the end of the 1900’s.[1]

Oliver worked alongside the 4AD record label in creating album covers and record sleeves for the majority of the labels projects, he worked with 4AD to create a visual identity across their releases that was recognisable and distinctive. Vaughan Oliver had a number of influences when he came to designing, while he was studying Oliver had a keen interest in current pop-art and pop culture artists such as Andy Warhol. In addition to his love for music and design Vaughan Oliver was an avid fan of football – unfortunately supporting Sunderland FC, Oliver went on to design the 1992 FA Cup single for Sunderland Football Club and was later asked to create a redesign of the clubs crest.[2]

I have included some of Vaughan Oliver’s work below to illustrate how was influenced by pop-art and pop culture, and including that into his work throughout the postmodernist design era.
