David Carson

Bron in 1955, David Carson is a renowned graphic designer, typographer and art director from the United States of America. Carson is best known for his work on album covers and magazines, most notably Ray Gun magazine where he was appointed as art director of the magazine throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s. David Carson is renowned for his experimental approach to typography and places a heavy emphasis on typography and layout. After leaving Ray Gun magazine, Carson went on to start up his own design studio in 1995 called David Carson Design based in New York, USA.[1]

Carson gained recognition for his work throughout the late 1980’s through to the 1990’s where he was often consider as the godfather of grunge due to his graphic design style and experimental approach to typography and design. In addition to being influenced by the postmodernist design movement throughout the late 1900’s, Carson also took inspiration from the grunge trend that gained popularity throughout the 1990’s and is still present in designs today where elements of grunge and postmodernism can be seen.[2]

I have included some of David Carson’s work below to illustrate his interesting and experimental approach to typography and how he is recognised as the godfather of grunge.
