Braney Bubbles
Barney Bubbles was an influential British graphic design renowned for his work on record sleeves and album cover designs, Bubbles started to gain popularity in his work throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s where he was heavily associated with the music scene at the time. Barney’s work extended into his relationship with the music scene throughout the late 1900’s and he became considered as one of the founding fathers of album cover design. In addition to his work within the music scene, Barney Bubbles has worked on a wide range of mediums throughout his career including brand identity, posters, t-shirts and badges as well as music video production and videography where he worked alongside the international renowned band – The Specials.[1]
Barney Bubbles had a unique style of design where he was heavily influenced by the postmodernist design movement throughout the 1970’s, Bubbles work holds the same anarchist characteristics displaying the same ideas and philosophies that were commonly seen throughout the postmodernist design movement and the punk-rock scene that was popular at the time.[2] Personally I think Barney Bubble’s work is interesting and experimental but it’s not something I personally like as I see design differently to the ideas behind the postmodernist movement, that’s not to say I don’t appreciate it thought because its really interesting and unique.
I have included some of Barney Bubbles work below to give you an idea on how he was influenced by postmodernist principles and how his design design that anarchist style that was common through this design period.
