Paul Rand

Paul Rand is possibly one of the most recognisable names in the design industry today as his work and ideas have had a huge impact on how we design for the modern world. Born in 1914, Paul Rand is an American graphic designer and art director renowned for his worm on corporate identities some of which include the famous IBM logo, the UPS logo, ABC logo and the NeXT logo just to name a few.[1] Rand was influenced by a number of modernist movements such as Modernism, Dadaism and Constructivism but he was well known for being one of the first American commercial graphic designers to direct his practices towards the ideas and philosophies similarly seen in Swiss Design. His inspiration didn’t stop there as he had a love for the work on Modernist designers such as Jan Tschichold which influenced his design style even more.[2]

In his later life Rand went on to become a lecturer at the infamous Yale University from 1956 to around 1969 where he took a break from Yale until 1974, he then went on to continue his teachings at Yale University until 1985. In addition to his work as a graphic designer and logo designer Rand was also well known for his work as an art director where he was inducted into the New York Art Director Club Hall of Fame near his home town of Brooklyn in 1972.[2]
