Josef Muller Brockmann

Josef Muller Brockmann is one of the most influential names to come from the International Typographic Style and the Swiss Design movement, most commonly recognised by his use of typography and systematic grid based layouts. Born in 1914, Josef Muller Brockmann was a Swiss born graphic designer, author and educator who was a pioneer of the Swiss Design movement in the 1950’s, his work had had a huge impact on design for the modern world and has become a huge influence for many designers in the 21st century.

Muller Brockmann is widely recognised by his use of sans-serif typography, shape, colour and grid systems which were a key proponent of the International Typographic Style and the Swiss Design movement throughout the mid 1900’s, Brockmann explored the idea of abstract modernism in his work and focused on utilising basic forms and geometric shapes to convey a message as opposed to illustrations and photography that were used in previous design movements.

I have included some of Josef Muller Brockmann’s work below to give you an idea on how he used Swiss Design principles and philosophies throughout his designs and how he used typography to create abstract designs.
