Herbert Matter
Herbert Matter is one of the most influential artists known today, renowned for his work with typography and photography in addition to his fusion of Swiss design and American pop culture he in one of the most notable designers from the 20th century and the Modernist design movement in the mid 1900’s.[2] Matter was initially born in Switzerland before he relocated to the United States of America, he is famously known for his poster and advertising work which placed a heavy emphasis on modernist ideas and principles in addition to the use of new emerging technologies at the time like photography and photomontage. Herbert Matter’s use of photography and photomontage became a huge influence for other modernist design movements and the Post-Modernism movement that came shortly after, this is what put Herbert Matter on the map and made him one of the most influential figures in design today as well as a pioneer in commercial visual arts and graphic arts.[1]
Famously know for the work he had done on the WWII poster, Matter is also recognised by the work he did for the Swiss Tourism Office where he created a series of posters for the office to promote and advertise the tourist attractions in Switzerland. These projects are a distinct representation on Herbert Matter’s design style and what he is renowned for. He later went on to be hired by Alexey Brodovitch and worked alongside hime on the Harper’s Bazaar magazine project, a few years later Herbert Matter went on to work for Vogue magazine as well as many others and became an influential name in magazine design and page layout within the design industry through his use of photography, photomontage and typography.[2]
