Josef Albers

Josef Albers, born in 1888,  is a famous American-German designer, author and educator best known for his abstract paintings and his role in the geometric abstraction movement in the 1900’s, he is considered as on of the most influential lecturers of visual design. He is often recognised by his study of colour and research into how colour. In 1963, Albers published his book Interaction of Colour which explores colour theory and how colours are perceived by humans.[1]

Albers went on to study painting at the Bauhaus School in 1920, becoming one of Johannes Itten’s students who was also a famous German designer from the Bauhaus design period. Albers went on to teach stained glass making at the same school within the same decade.

After the closure of the Bauhaus School due to the Nazi rein in 1933, Albers along with many other designers in Germany moved to the United States. Josef went on to teaching colour and design at Black Mountain College in North Carolina before going on to become head of the department for design at Yale University in 1950.[2]

Josef Albers worked with many different mediums within art and design including photography, typography, murals and printing and his love for architecture carried through to his teaching of stained glass making at the Bauhaus School in the 1920’s.
