Rigging my Character

Rigging my character has been a challenging process. To begin with I spent a good deal of time trying to rig him as though he were a snake as I pictured him moving as such, following closely a tutorial I had found online.

Issues with this made themselves evident when I struggled to get him into position. When Alec saw how I’d rigged my worm and I explained to him how I intended for my worm to be and move, he suggested I try again and start with the mesh something close to his main position by applying a bend deformer. Since the worm won’t deviate from this base position it makes more sense to start the rig off like this.

From here, Alec was very helpful in sending me a video of how I could go about rigging from here by having a root joint between two separate rigs for the body and for the tail, since the tail will have to function differently to hold the gun.

By having each joint shorter than the one before it allows you to create this cool spiral effect when you select them all in sequence and rotate them. A simple solution that does exactly what I need it to. After a few tests with different amounts of subdivisions and joints I found a good place that I can work from.
