IXD304 – Beginning the Apollo project (Week 1)

Project Overview

In this weeks’ online lecture, we got a quick overview from Kyle about our new module which will run over the next 12 weeks. The main skills that we are going to learn from this Narrative and Storytelling module include:

  • how to use storytelling to enhance content
  • how art direction, pacing and narrative can control the flow of information
  • how to create narrative web-based content

Our main deliverables for this project are:

  1. Immmersive prototype (due week 6)
  2. Website or digital publication (due week 12)
  3. Final presentation (due week 13)

Our task is to base our storytelling content around the Apollo Space Programme, which I think will be a really fun project. When listening to the lecture and looking at past students’ work for this module, it reminded me about an article I read recently about 2022 UX trends which talked all about ‘scrollytelling’ which I thought was relevant to this project so I decided to read into it a little more.

Scrollytelling

‘”Scrollytelling” was a term first coined to describe online longform stories characterised by audio, video and animation effects triggered by simply scrolling the page.’ Christine M, shorthand.com

It means that every time you scroll down on a digital product, there is engaging content such as animations, videos, illustrations etc. so that the narrative is brought to life. It gives the appearance of the story unfolding on the screen.

It works great for content that has a chronological order, which is perfect for this project. It can break up content and information in a much more interesting, easy to understand way.

Benefits of using this technique include longer time spent on website and increased shares and engagement from user. The downside is that it can be a lot more time consuming than designing a typical website.
